About Paraguay and its flag
Paraguay’s national flag is a horizontal red, white, and blue tricolour. For formal state use, the Pabellón de la República is defined as that flag with two national seals placed in the centre of the white band, one on each face. Paraguay’s Constitution names the pavilion among the republic’s national symbols.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has three equal horizontal bands: red at the top, white in the middle, and blue at the bottom. The obverse seal shows a five-pointed yellow star within palm and olive branches and the words “República del Paraguay.” The reverse bears a separate circular seal with a lion, staff, red Phrygian cap, and “Paz y Justicia.”
- Red Phrygian cap on the reverse seal: The 1842 description identifies the cap as the symbol of liberty; the current regulation retains it at the top of the staff behind the lion.
- Reverse-seal inscription: The lion-and-cap seal is encircled by the words “Paz y Justicia,” explicitly placing “Peace and Justice” in the official emblem.
History and adoption
The current regulation states, for educational purposes, that the pavilion was first raised on 15 August 1812, the date from which it traces the definitive colours. Its formal description, however, follows the Extraordinary General Congress resolution of 25 November 1842, which described an already-existing flag with modifications. The 2013 decree standardized design and use.
