About Andorra and its flag
Andorra’s Constitution identifies its flag, anthem and coat of arms as traditional national symbols. The flag is the familiar vertical blue, yellow and red tricolour, normally bearing the national arms.
Flag design and meaning
Three similar vertical stripes run blue at the hoist, yellow in the middle and red at the fly. The Andorran coat of arms is placed centrally on the yellow stripe. The state-signs law permits the arms to be left out in reduced or specialised formats, leaving the plain tricolour.
- Blue stripe: The National Archives’ account links the addition of blue in the nineteenth-century tricolour to making France’s co-sovereignty over Andorra visible.
- Central coat of arms: The state-signs law describes four traditional houses in the arms, two associated with each of the co-princes: the Bishopric, Catalonia, Foix and Béarn.
- Mitre and crosier in the arms: These identify the Bishopric quarter of the traditional arms.
History and adoption
The National Archives describes the tricolour as emerging through a process rather than from one undisputed adoption act. Its account dates the beginning of that process to 1866 and says the flag was probably first used abroad at the 1868 Paris Universal Exposition. In December 1942, the General Council stated that the official flag was a vertical blue-yellow-red tricolour. The Archives also records the formal incorporation of the arms at the centre in the constitutional era of the 1990s; current law preserves the option of an uncharged tricolour for certain formats.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for a vertical blue-yellow-red tricolour with a detailed shield centred on the yellow stripe.
- It can resemble Romania or Chad at a distance, but Andorra’s arms are the quickest distinction.
- Small official reproductions may omit the arms, so the blue stripe should be at the hoist.
