About Austria and its flag

Austria’s flag is the Republic’s red–white–red tricolour. Article 8a of the Federal Constitutional Law identifies those as the Republic’s colours and defines a flag with three equally wide horizontal bands: red at top and bottom and white in the middle. The constitutional definition describes the plain flag without an emblem.

Flag design and meaning

The required layout is a rectangle of three equally wide horizontal stripes. The upper and lower stripes are red, while white occupies the central stripe. For identification, check that all three bands have the same depth and that the basic design has no central shield or other device.

  • Red–white–red colour arrangement: Austria’s Federal Constitutional Law designates red–white–red as the colours of the Republic. This is a legal identification of the state, rather than a claim that the individual colours have fixed meanings.

History and adoption

Austria’s Parliament records that the state colours red–white–red were set on 31 October 1918 during the formation of German-Austria. Article 8a now gives the flag’s constitutional description as three equal horizontal bands. Together, the sources mark a 1918 decision and a legal description without treating either as the design’s sole adoption date.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for three equal-width horizontal bands: red, white, then red from top to bottom.
  • Austria’s basic flag has no central shield or other device; the white band is the same depth as both red bands.
