About Liechtenstein and its flag

Liechtenstein’s national flag is a blue-over-red bicolour with a gold Princely crown near the hoist in the blue stripe. Article 5 of its Constitution establishes blue and red as the national colours, while the Government’s official guide describes the crowned rectangular flag in current use.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has two equally wide horizontal bands: blue on top and red below. A gold Princely crown is placed in the blue band close to the hoist. The Government describes it as a rectangular cloth attached loosely to a pole.

Gold Princely crown: The crown identifies the device as princely: the Government calls it the Princely crown, and the Constitution defines Liechtenstein as a constitutional hereditary monarchy.

History and adoption

Liechtenstein’s 1921 Constitution establishes blue and red as the national colours. A Liechtenstein National Administration publication states that the country has used the horizontal blue-red flag with a gold Princely crown in the blue field since 1937. This distinguishes the constitutional colour provision from the later-described crowned design.

How to recognise this flag

Look first for the simple blue-over-red horizontal bicolour; blue is always the upper band.
The small gold crown near the upper hoist is the decisive feature that distinguishes it from an uncrowned blue-red bicolour.
