About Slovenia and its flag
Slovenia’s state flag is a white, blue and red horizontal tricolour carrying Slovenia’s coat of arms near the upper hoist. Its 1:2 proportion makes it notably longer than Slovakia’s similar-looking flag, and the arms deliberately cross the boundary between the white and blue stripes.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has three equal horizontal bands: white at the top, blue in the middle and red at the bottom, in a 1:2 width-to-length ratio. The coat of arms is in the upper left canton, with half of it in the white band and half in the blue. It shows white Mount Triglav, two wavy lines and three gold six-pointed stars.
- Two wavy lines below Mount Triglav: The Government of Slovenia states that the two wavy lines on the coat of arms symbolise the sea and rivers.
- Lower part of the coat of arms: Government material describes the lower part of the arms as symbolising Slovenia’s landscape, including Alpine peaks in the northwest, the Primorska region in the south and the Pannonian Plain in the east.
History and adoption
Slovenian government material traces the white-blue-red national flag to 1848, when students first displayed it in Vienna; it was first raised in Ljubljana on 7 April that year. The National Assembly formalised the national flag on 24 June 1991, shortly before independence, and the 1994 act regulates the state flag and national flag.
