About Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and its flag

Côte d’Ivoire’s national flag is an orange, white and green vertical tricolour. The Ministry of Public Service identifies it as the national emblem and records that Law No. 59-240 of 3 December 1959 created that emblem. Article 48 of the 2016 Constitution describes the flag as three vertical bands of equal size, while the ministry supplies official explanations for the colours.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has three equal vertical bands, read from the hoist as orange, white and green. It has no coat of arms, badge, lettering or other central charge. The equal-width stripes and the orange band at the hoist are the key construction details stated in the official description.

Orange band: The ministry connects orange with the country’s rich and generous soil and with the struggle for emancipation.
White band: The official explanation associates white with peace, specifically peace founded on law.

History and adoption

The Ministry of Public Service traces the creation of the national emblem to Law No. 59-240 of 3 December 1959. The later constitutional description in Article 48 retains the orange, white and green flag in equal vertical bands.
