Flag design and meaning

The official description gives six red stripes and five alternating white stripes. At the upper left is a blue field in a rectangular flag, with a single white star at the centre of that blue field. The cited proclamation does not specify the field’s shape beyond this description or the number of points on the star.

• The eleven stripes: The proclamation says the eleven stripes represent the eleven signers of Liberia’s Declaration of Independence.
• The white star in the blue field: The proclamation says this depicts Liberia as the then only independent state on the African continent.
• Red: The proclamation states that red symbolizes the blood of those who died in the struggle for independence.

History and adoption

The 2025 presidential proclamation says that the national flag was designed and produced by a committee of women led by Mrs. Susannah Lewis. It also cites an Act approved by Liberia’s Legislature on 25 October 1915 that declared 24 August each year National Flag Day, to be observed as a public holiday.
