About Algeria and its flag

Algeria’s national emblem is a green-and-white flag with a red crescent and five-pointed star at its centre. The 2020 Constitution identifies it as a permanent symbol of the Revolution of 1 November 1954 and of the Republic.

Flag design and meaning

The flag is a 3:2 rectangle divided into two equal vertical halves: green at the hoist and white at the fly. A red crescent and a red five-pointed star are centred across the division. Law No. 63-145 sets the detailed geometry, including the star’s five points and the crescent’s proportions.

History and adoption

Law No. 63-145, dated 25 April 1963, formally defined the flag’s technical characteristics. Its explanatory memorandum says the design already existed as one adopted by the people and associated with patriots and martyrs, so the 1963 date is a legal codification rather than evidence of a single first adoption. The 2020 Constitution later described the emblem as an enduring achievement of the 1954 Revolution.

How to recognise this flag

Look first for the vertical split: green beside the flagpole and white at the outer edge.
