About Pakistan and its flag

Pakistan’s national flag is documented in the official record of the Constituent Assembly’s 11 August 1947 debate. The Assembly adopted a resolution describing a dark-green rectangular flag with a white hoist bar, white crescent, and five-pointed white heraldic star.

Flag design and meaning

The adopted resolution specifies a 3:2 flag: a white vertical bar at the mast occupies one quarter of the flag, while the remaining three quarters are dark green. A white crescent and five-pointed white heraldic star appear in the green portion.

  • The flag as a whole: In presenting the resolution, Liaquat Ali Khan said the flag would stand for freedom, liberty, and equality for those owing allegiance to Pakistan; this is his stated interpretation in the Assembly debate.

History and adoption

On 11 August 1947, Liaquat Ali Khan moved the flag resolution in the Constituent Assembly. An amendment proposing a committee to determine the design was rejected; the Assembly then put the original resolution and adopted it.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the distinctive white vertical bar at the hoist, which takes up one quarter of the flag’s length.
  • On the dark-green field, identify the white crescent paired with a five-pointed white star rather than a plain emblem or central badge.
