Turkmenistan’s State Flag is an exceptionally detailed national design: a green field carries a red-maroon carpet panel, white crescent and five stars, and olive branches. Its governing law identifies the flag with the unity and independence of Turkmenistan’s people and the state’s neutrality.

Flag design and meaning

The law specifies a green rectangular flag with a width-to-length ratio of 1:1.5. Five named carpet guls run down the red-maroon vertical panel and are framed by carpet ornament; two crossed olive branches occupy its lower part. A white crescent and five white five-pointed stars appear in the upper-left of the larger green section.

The five carpet guls: The flag law says the five principal guls symbolize friendship and cohesion among the Turkmen people.
The intertwined olive branches: An official embassy account describes the branches as personifying Turkmenistan’s longstanding peaceful disposition after the country obtained permanent neutrality.

History and adoption

The flag law is dated 19 February 1992, while the legislature records that a new edition was approved on 24 January 2001 and subsequently amended through March 2023. An official embassy account says that the intertwined olive branches were placed on the green banner after Turkmenistan obtained permanent neutrality in 1995. These are distinct stages in the flag’s legal and visual development.

How to recognise this flag

Look for the red-maroon carpet panel with five stacked, different-looking guls; it is much more intricate than an ordinary vertical stripe.
At the panel’s base are crossed olive branches, while the green field carries a white crescent and exactly five white stars.
