About Turkey and its flag
Türkiye’s national flag is a solid red rectangle with a white crescent and white five-pointed star. Article 3 of the Constitution gives this general description, while the Turkish Flag Law prescribes its form and proportions. The two white devices sit together on the red field rather than within a panel, shield, or disk.
Flag design and meaning
Keep the field completely red. Set the white crescent toward the hoist side, opening toward the fly, with the white five-pointed star immediately beyond its inner curve. Law No. 2893 fixes the overall length at one and a half times the width and specifies the positions and diameters of the crescent and star.
- Crescent and star: Türkiye’s Presidency of Migration Management says the star-and-crescent represents Türkiye. This is a statement of national representation, while the constitutional and flag-law texts prescribe appearance rather than a full symbolic code.
- Red field: The official Life Guide presents the red field as the colour of martyrs’ blood and describes the crescent and star as a night-time reflection in that blood. This should be read as a traditional national account, not as a technical definition in Law No. 2893.
History and adoption
An official Migration Management guide says the red flag with white crescent and star was adopted by the Ottoman Empire in 1844. It distinguishes later legal milestones: Law No. 2994 of 29 May 1936 regulated the flag for the Republic, and Law No. 2893, accepted on 22 September 1983, replaced the 1936 law.
