About Armenia and its flag
Armenia’s flag is a device-free horizontal tricolour of red, blue and orange. The Constitution specifies equal horizontal stripes in that order, while the government describes the national flag as a state symbol with a 1:2 width-to-length ratio.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has three equal horizontal stripes: red at the top, blue in the middle and orange at the bottom. Its official width-to-length ratio is 1:2, and it carries no emblem or other central device.
- Red: The government associates it with the Armenian Highland, the Armenian people’s continuing struggle to survive, the Christian faith, and Armenia’s independence and freedom.
- Blue: It represents the Armenian people’s wish to live beneath peaceful skies.
- Orange: It represents the creative talent and industrious character of the Armenian people.
History and adoption
According to the Government of Armenia, the Supreme Soviet adopted a law on the State Flag on 24 August 1990. Following constitutional reforms of 27 November 2005, a new law on the national flag was adopted on 15 June 2006.
