About Bangladesh and its flag
Bangladesh’s national flag has a bottle-green field and a red disc. The Flag Rules prescribe its 10:6 shape, the disc’s radius, and a centre set toward the hoist. It grew out of an independence-era design that placed a map of Bangladesh within the red disc, producing a notably spare national design.
Flag design and meaning
Bangladesh’s Flag Rules call for a bottle-green rectangle in a 10:6 length-to-width proportion, carrying a red circle. The circle’s radius is one fifth of the flag length; its centre is nine twentieths of the length from the hoist and on the horizontal midline. That construction offsets the disc from the geometric centre.
- Red disc: A 2019 New York State Assembly resolution describes the red disc as the rising sun over Bengal and as a reference to people who died for Bangladesh’s independence.
History and adoption
Before the map-free design, the independence-era banner placed a map of Bangladesh on the red disc. A New York State Assembly resolution records that the map was removed because reproducing it accurately on both sides was difficult and says the new design was made the official national flag on 17 January 1972. The Flag Rules named for 1972 subsequently prescribe the map-free design.
