About Myanmar and its flag

Myanmar’s Union Flag has equal yellow, green, and red horizontal bands, centred by a large white five-pointed star. Its legally prescribed model is a 9-by-6-foot rectangle, and the star crosses all three colour fields. The Union Flag Law requires the same proportions and colours to be maintained when the flag is made at other sizes.

Flag design and meaning

The legal model is a rectangle with a 3:2 proportion. Yellow, green, and red each occupy one third of the height, from top to bottom. A large upright white five-pointed star is centred on the flag and overlays all three bands.

Yellow: The Union Flag Law associates it with unity, harmony, wisdom, happiness, and the amicable unity of the national races.
Green: It signifies fertility, harmony, fairness, and a peaceful, pleasant, green nation.
Red: It signifies bravery and decisiveness.
White star: Its white colour signifies purity, honesty, compassion, and power.

History and adoption

The 2008 Constitution refers to the State Flag. The Union Flag Law enacted on 21 October 2010 identifies the Union Flag as that constitutional flag, specifies its model, and repeals the 1974 State Flag Law. The 2010 law also connects its yellow, green, and red background to a tricolour used during Myanmar’s independence struggle.
