About Thailand and its flag
Thailand’s national flag, the Trairong, is a five-band horizontal design in red, white, blue, white, and red. The centre blue band is double width. Thailand’s official public-information pages give the 6:9 proportion and describe the colours as references to the nation, religion, and the King.
Flag design and meaning
The rectangle is six units wide by nine units long. Across it run five horizontal bands, with a blue centre two units high and white and red bands one unit high on either side. From top to bottom the arrangement is red, white, blue, white, red; there is no device on the field.
- Red bands: Thailand’s Public Relations Department says red represents the nation and the unity of its people.
- White bands: Thailand’s Public Relations Department identifies white with religion.
- Blue centre band: Thailand’s Public Relations Department says blue stands for the King, as head of state.
History and adoption
Government historical material traces earlier flags from an unmarked red field through royal and commercial variants. It records a red-and-white five-stripe flag in 1916, then says the Trairong was proclaimed the national flag on 28 September 1917 during Rama VI’s reign. A government notice says it continues as the national flag.
How to recognise this flag
- The broad blue middle stripe is twice the width of each red or white stripe.
- The bands form a mirror-symmetrical sequence: red, white, blue, white, red.
- Unlike several other red-white-blue flags, Thailand’s national flag has no stars, shield, or other central emblem.
