About Azerbaijan and its flag
Azerbaijan’s national flag is a horizontal blue, red, and green tricolour with a white crescent and eight-pointed star. The Constitution identifies it as a state symbol and specifies a 1:2 width-to-length ratio.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal horizontal bands run blue at the top, red in the middle, and green at the bottom. A white crescent and white eight-pointed star sit centrally on the red band; the crescent’s points face the star on its right.
- Blue band: The Ministry identifies blue with the Turkic origin of the Azerbaijani people.
- Red band: The Ministry associates red with the aim of building a modern society and developing democracy.
- Green band: The Ministry links green with belonging to Islamic civilization.
History and adoption
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs records the tricolour as having been adopted during November 1918 and raised over the parliament building on 7 December 1918. It says the flag lost state status in April 1920, returned as Nakhchivan’s national flag in November 1990, and was then recognised as Azerbaijan’s national flag by the Supreme Soviet on 5 February 1991.
How to recognise this flag
- Read the bands from top to bottom as blue, red, then green.
- The white crescent and unusually eight-pointed star are centred in the red band.
- The crescent opens toward the star at its right.
