About Laos and its flag

Laos’s national flag is constitutionally described as dark blue with red edges and a centred white moon. The National Assembly identifies it as the flag of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and gives it a 2:3 height-to-length proportion. Its large central white device makes the three-band layout especially easy to recognise.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has red horizontal bands at the top and bottom and a dark-blue middle band. Each red band is half the height of the blue band, producing a 1:2:1 arrangement. A white circular moon is centred on the blue, with a diameter four-fifths of that band’s height; the overall proportion is 2:3.

Central white moon: The National Assembly and the constitutional text explicitly identify the central white device as a moon. They specify its position and size, but do not assign further official meanings to the colours, so none is asserted here.

History and adoption

The constitutional text records 2 December 1975 as the national day, marking the proclamation of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and describes the national flag in a separate article. This places the flag within the state’s constitutional framework, but the text does not call that date an adoption date. The National Assembly’s current country page repeats the same design.

How to recognise this flag

Look for the unusually large white circle: its diameter is four-fifths of the blue band’s height.
The blue centre band is twice the height of either red outer band, so the stripes are not equal.
