About Bahrain and its flag

Bahrain’s national flag has a white section at the hoist and a red field at the fly, separated by a five-part serrated division. Its distinctive five white triangular points are both a legal design feature and the flag’s principal identifying mark.

Flag design and meaning

The flag is a horizontal rectangle with a width equal to three-fifths of its length. The red section occupies three-quarters of the length and the white section one-quarter. Their boundary is serrated into five sections: each section forms the base of a white isosceles triangle extending into the red field.

  • The five-part serrated division: The five triangles represent the five pillars of Islam.

History and adoption

The official Bahraini Flag Guide records an earlier plain red flag, the addition of a white strip in 1820, a 1932 version with 28 red triangles, and a 1971 version with eight red and eight white overlapping triangles. On 14 February 2002, the number of triangles was reduced from eight to five; the present form is set out in Decree-Law No. (4) of 2002.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the white hoist section joined to the red field by exactly five triangular points.
  • The flag has no central emblem; its compact 3:5 shape and sharply serrated colour boundary carry the design.
