About Qatar and its flag
Qatar’s national flag is a distinctive maroon-and-white bicolour with a serrated division at the hoist. State sources call the maroon colour Al Adam and specify nine isosceles triangles along the boundary. Law No. 14 of 2012 places the flag’s design, materials, dimensions and use under formal legal specifications.
Flag design and meaning
The flag is a horizontal rectangle with white at the mast and maroon at the free end. Nine isosceles triangles form the serrated boundary: their bases lie in the white area and their points extend into the maroon field. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs identifies the maroon as Pantone 1955 C.
- White field: Qatar’s Ministry of Interior describes white as an internationally recognised symbol of peace.
- Maroon field: The Ministry of Interior says the maroon colour symbolises bloodshed in wars experienced by Qatar, particularly in the second half of the nineteenth century.
- Nine-point serration: The Ministry of Interior says the nine points indicate Qatar’s place as the ninth member of the reconciled Emirates of the Arabian Gulf after the 1916 Qatari-British treaty.
History and adoption
A Ministry of Defence account describes a 1932 flag that included nine triangles, maroon diamonds and the word “Qatar” on the maroon field. It says that in 1960 the diamonds and lettering were removed while the white and maroon colours remained. Law No. 14 of 2012 later set statutory specifications and protocol for the flag.
How to recognise this flag
- Look first for the unusually deep maroon rather than a bright red field.
- Count the serration: Qatar has nine white-to-maroon points along a broad white hoist stripe.
- The white is at the pole and the maroon occupies the fly side, with no emblem or lettering on the current flag.
