About Saudi Arabia and its flag
Saudi Arabia’s national flag is a green field bearing the white shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, above a white sword. Article 3 of the Basic Law specifies its principal features and states that the flag may not be flown at half-mast.
Flag design and meaning
The flag is rectangular, entirely green, and two-thirds as wide as it is long. A white shahada in Thuluth script is centred on the field, with a white unsheathed sword beneath it. The sword’s hilt faces the flagpole side.

History and adoption
Official Saudi reference traces the green shahada banner to the First Saudi State in 1727. It places approval of the current form during King Abdulaziz’s reign in 1937; the 1973 Flag Law and the 1992 Basic Law later set out its legal specifications.
