About Kuwait and its flag

Kuwait’s national flag is a four-colour design associated with the state-building period that followed independence in 1961. Kuwait Government Online identifies an earlier red flag bearing the country’s name and records its replacement by the current flag. A government account says the present design followed a 1961 decree and was first raised over government buildings on 24 November that year.

Flag design and meaning

The flag is read as three horizontal bands: green at the top, white through the middle, and red at the bottom. A black trapezoid occupies the hoist side, its longer vertical edge against the flagpole and its shorter vertical edge pointing into the three bands.

  • The four national colours: Kuwait News Agency links the colours to a poetic formulation it attributes to Safyeddin Al-Helli: white for deeds, black for battles, green for pastures, and red for swords. This is a reported cultural explanation of the colours.

History and adoption

Kuwait used several earlier red standards. The Kuwait News Agency reports that early twentieth-century flags included red designs carrying the country’s name or religious text. It distinguishes the issue of the new-flag decree in 1961 from the date it took effect, 24 November 1961; Kuwait Government Online likewise identifies that day as the first raising on government buildings.

How to recognise this flag

  • Start at the hoist: Kuwait has a solid black trapezoid rather than a triangle or vertical stripe.
  • Away from the black shape, the remaining field is a clean green-white-red horizontal tricolour, with no emblem or lettering.
