About Iraq and its flag

Iraq’s flag is set out through amendments to the Iraqi Flag Law. Law No. 9 of 2008 removes the three stars and their stated meanings, and requires the Arabic takbir, “Allahu Akbar,” in Kufic script. Law No. 32 of 2009 replaces the original one-year limit with wording that keeps the arrangement in force until a new Iraqi flag law is issued.

Flag design and meaning

The design has three equal horizontal bands, red above white above black. The green Arabic words “Allahu Akbar” are written in Kufic script on the white band. Law No. 9 places the words in the central part of that white rectangle and expressly removes the three green stars.

  • The flag colours: Law No. 9 describes the Iraqi flag’s colours as the colours of Islamic banners.

History and adoption

Law No. 9 of 2008 amended the earlier flag legislation by deleting the three stars and their stated meanings, and by replacing the specified handwriting for the takbir with Kufic script. Its original time limit was later removed by Law No. 32 of 2009, which provides for the arrangement to operate until a new Iraqi flag law is issued.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the red, white, and black bands in that top-to-bottom order.
  • The white middle band carries green Kufic Arabic writing rather than stars.
  • A flag with three green stars is not the design described by Law No. 9 of 2008.
