About Jordan and its flag
Jordan’s national flag combines a black, white and green horizontal tricolour with a red hoist triangle and a white seven-pointed star. Article 4 of the Constitution prescribes its proportions and construction, while the Royal Hashemite Court identifies the design as inspired by the Great Arab Revolt banner.
Flag design and meaning
The flag is twice as long as it is wide. Three equal horizontal bands run black at the top, white in the centre and green at the bottom. A red triangle projects from the hoist, containing a white seven-pointed star whose size, central position and orientation are specified in Article 4 of the Constitution.
- White seven-pointed star: The Royal Hashemite Court identifies the heptagram with the seven verses of Surat Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran.
- Red hoist triangle: The Royal Hashemite Court describes the red chevron as the Hashemites’ banner since the time of Sharif Abu Nami.
- Black, white and green bands: The Royal Hashemite Court associates the black, white and green respectively with the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid states.
History and adoption
The Royal Hashemite Court says the flag in its current form was endorsed in 1922 and officially adopted in 1928 with the Basic Law of the Emirate of Transjordan. It also traces the design’s colours and form to the Great Arab Revolt banner, so these dates mark separate milestones rather than one undifferentiated adoption event.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for the small white seven-pointed star inside the red triangle at the hoist.
- Confirm the horizontal order: black above white above green, with a 2:1 length-to-width proportion.
