About Palestine and its flag

The Palestinian flag combines a red triangle at the hoist with horizontal black, white and green bands. The State of Palestine’s foreign ministry describes it as the State’s official flag and as a flag used to represent the Palestinian people.

Flag design and meaning

The design has three equal horizontal bands: black at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. A red isosceles triangle is based on the hoist edge. The 1964 PLO specifications gave the flag a length twice its width.

  • The four colours: The foreign ministry records a common origin account linking white with deeds, black with battles, green with fields and red with swords in a medieval poem. It presents this as an account of the colours’ origin, not as a universal official colour code.

History and adoption

Its use has several milestones rather than one simple origin date. The foreign ministry traces it to the 1916 Arab Revolt, while the PLO adopted the present design for the Palestinian people in 1964 and adopted it as the State of Palestine’s flag in 1988. A 2015 UN resolution later provided for flags of non-member observer States to be raised at UN offices.

How to recognise this flag

  • Read the horizontal bands from top to bottom: black, then white, then green.
  • The red triangle is at the hoist and contains no star, crescent, seal or other emblem.
