Egypt’s national flag has red, white, and black horizontal bands, with a golden Eagle of Saladin centered on the white band. The Constitution identifies the three colours and golden-yellow eagle, while the Presidency says the present flag became national in October 1984.
Flag design and meaning
Read from top to bottom, the horizontal bands are red, white, and black. The white central band carries a golden eagle. Egypt’s Constitution identifies the emblem as the Eagle of Salah El Din in golden yellow, and the Presidency places it in the middle of the white band.
- Red band: The Presidency says red expresses power and hope and also symbolizes martyrs’ blood.
- White band: The Presidency says white represents the country’s bright future.
- Black band: The Presidency links black with oppression and occupation, and with the days Egyptians fought injustice.
History and adoption
Egypt’s Presidency says the red–white–black horizontal flag became the national flag in October 1984. Article 223 of the Constitution supplies the constitutional description, naming the black, white, and red colours and the golden-yellow Eagle of Salah El Din.
