About Israel and its flag

Israel’s Basic Law: Israel – The Nation State of the Jewish People describes the State flag as white with two light-blue stripes close to the edges and a light-blue Star of David at the centre. The Ministry of Education records that the Provisional Council officially selected the Zionist movement flag for the State on 28 October 1948; a 1949 law subsequently established its legal standing.

Flag design and meaning

The national flag has a white field, two light-blue horizontal stripes placed close to its upper and lower edges, and a light-blue Star of David at the centre. The 2018 Basic Law gives this description of the State flag. Israel’s Ministry of Education identifies the design as the former flag of the Zionist movement selected for use by the State.

  • Two blue stripes: The Ministry of Education links the flag’s blue-and-white colours to the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl with its blue thread.
  • Star of David: The Ministry of Education says that the Star of David had become identified with Judaism through artworks and ritual objects.

History and adoption

The present pattern predates the State. The Ministry of Education says that a similar blue-and-white flag bearing a Star of David was flown at Rishon LeZion in 1885 and that the design served the Zionist movement from its 1897 founding. On 28 October 1948, the Provisional Council officially selected that movement flag for the State; a 1949 law then set its legal status.

How to recognise this flag

  • Begin with the white field and a centred blue six-pointed Star of David.
  • Identify the two matching blue horizontal stripes near the top and bottom edges; there is no additional emblem or lettering.
