About Syria and its flag

Syria's Ministry of Culture describes the official flag as a green, white and black horizontal tricolour with three red stars centred in the white stripe. The Ministry calls this design both the Flag of Independence and the Flag of the Syrian Revolution, describing historical and political associations of the same flag.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has three equal horizontal stripes: green at the top, white in the middle and black at the bottom. Three red five-pointed stars are aligned horizontally at the centre of the white stripe. The description follows the Ministry of Culture's current official English flag guide.

  • Green band: The Ministry of Culture describes green as representing hope, growth and the Islamic heritage of the Rashidun Caliphate. This is the Ministry's stated cultural interpretation, not an inference from the colour alone.
  • Three red stars: The Ministry of Culture gives more than one reading: the stars may represent Damascus, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor, or freedom, dignity and justice. It says red commemorates the sacrifice of martyrs; these are stated cultural readings rather than a single exclusive meaning.

History and adoption

SANA distinguishes the 1928 constitutional draft, the design's formal approval in 1930 and its first raising in Aleppo in 1932. Its account says the banner was used until 1958, returned after the Syrian-Egyptian union ended in 1961, and remained in use until 1 May 1963. The Ministry of Culture says the design was adopted by the opposition in 2011 and later reinstated as the official national flag.

How to recognise this flag

  • Read the bands from top to bottom: green, white, then black. The order distinguishes it from similar tricolours.
  • Look for three red five-pointed stars in one horizontal row on the white central stripe.
  • Do not confuse it with a red-white-black flag carrying two green stars; this official design has green at the top and three red stars.
