Sudan uses a bold horizontal tricolour of red, white and black, completed by a green triangle at the hoist. The four-colour arrangement is immediately recognisable among national flags and is presented by Sudanese government sources as the country’s current national flag.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal horizontal bands run red at the top, white through the centre and black at the bottom. A solid green triangle projects from the hoist edge into those bands, creating a strong arrow-like shape that points toward the fly.

History and adoption
The flag raised at independence on 1 January 1956 was a horizontal green, yellow and blue tricolour. A Sudanese government source says that design was later replaced during the presidency of Jaafar Nimeiry; Sudan’s embassy in Qatar dates adoption of the present flag to 20 May 1970.
