Ethiopia’s federal flag is an equal horizontal green, yellow and red tricolour with a blue circular national emblem in the centre. Flag Proclamation No. 654/2009 describes it as a symbol of the republic’s sovereignty and of unity among its peoples based on their common will.
Flag design and meaning
Green occupies the top third, yellow the middle third and red the bottom third; the flag is twice as long as it is wide. At the centre is a blue disc bearing equal yellow lines that form a star, with yellow rays extending from their intersections.
- Green, yellow and red stripes: The 2009 proclamation assigns green to labour, fertility and development; yellow to hope, justice and equality; and red to sacrifice and heroism in pursuit of freedom and equality.
- Blue disc, yellow star and rays: Under the proclamation, blue signifies peace, the equal lines express equality, the star represents unity based on common will, and the rays indicate a bright prospect.
History and adoption
An Arba Minch University account traces the traditional three colours to Emperor Menelik and says they first appeared together on a flag in 1897. The present legal framework is Flag Proclamation No. 654/2009, which replaced the 1996 flag-and-emblem proclamations when published.
