Somalia’s national flag is a light blue rectangle with one centred white five-pointed star. This design is specified in Article 6 of the Provisional Constitution. The President’s Office distinguishes its first adoption on 12 October 1954 during the United Nations Trusteeship period from its official status from 1 July 1960, following independence and union.
Flag design and meaning
The constitutional description is especially simple: a light blue rectangular field with a white star of five equal points in the centre. There are no stripes, border, coat of arms, or other charges. The single star is the only feature interrupting the uninterrupted blue field.

History and adoption
The Office of the President states that the flag was first adopted on 12 October 1954 during the United Nations Trusteeship period. It separately identifies 1 July 1960 as the point from which it was official, when British and Italian Somaliland united to form the independent Somali Republic.
