About Angola and its flag
Angola’s national flag is one of the Republic’s constitutional symbols of sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. It combines a red upper band and black lower band with a yellow central emblem.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has two horizontal bands: red above and black below. At the centre is a yellow composition of part of a cogwheel, a machete and a five-pointed star.
- Red upper band: It represents the blood shed by Angolans during colonial oppression, the national liberation struggle and the defence of the country.
- Black lower band: It represents the African continent.
- Cogwheel: It represents workers and industrial production.
- Machete: It represents peasants, agricultural production and armed struggle.
- Star and yellow emblem colour: The star represents international solidarity and progress; the yellow of the cogwheel, machete and star represents the country’s wealth.
History and adoption
Article 18 of Angola’s Constitution identifies the flag as one of the national symbols adopted when independence was proclaimed on 11 November 1975. The Constitution retains the flag’s description in Annex I, while legislation governs its technical specifications, respect and use.
