About Burkina Faso and its flag

Burkina Faso’s national emblem is a horizontally divided red-and-green flag with a yellow-gold five-pointed star at its centre. The Presidency describes two equal bands, while the Constitutional Council reproduces the same flag description in its constitutional review.

Flag design and meaning

Red occupies the upper half and green the lower half, with equal bands. A five-pointed yellow-gold star crosses their boundary: its top point is in red and its two lower points are in green. The Presidency gives the star’s enclosing-circle diameter as about one third of the flag’s width.

Red upper band: The Presidency says red symbolizes blood shed by the revolution’s martyrs and, more broadly, the sacrifices of the Burkinabè people.
Green lower band: The Presidency identifies green with the people’s agricultural wealth and, by extension, abundance.
Yellow-gold star: The Presidency describes the star as the ideological guide of the Democratic and Popular Revolution.

History and adoption

The 2024 constitutional review reproduced the complete flag description in both the former and amended versions of Article 34. That revision concerned the national motto, not the flag description, so it is not a basis for presenting a new single adoption date for the flag.

How to recognise this flag

Look for the uncommon horizontal red-over-green colour order.
Confirm that one yellow-gold five-pointed star straddles the boundary between the two bands.
