About Togo and its flag

Togo’s flag is arranged in five alternating green and yellow horizontal stripes, with a red square in the upper hoist corner carrying a white five-pointed star. The Presidency of the Togolese Republic identifies the four colours and records the design as a national emblem adopted on the country’s independence day, 27 April 1960.

Flag design and meaning

Five horizontal stripes fill the field: the first, third and fifth stripes from the top are green, while the second and fourth are yellow. A red square occupies the upper hoist corner. At the centre of that red square is one white five-pointed star.

  • Yellow stripes: The Presidency says they represent faith, underground resources, and the maturity to face a common destiny.
  • Green stripes: The Presidency associates them with forest, agriculture and hope.
  • Red square and white star: The Presidency links red to blood shed by independence martyrs and compatriots who died for democracy and the rule of law; it associates the white star with peace, light and intelligence.

History and adoption

According to the Presidency of the Togolese Republic, the flag was designed by the art professor Paul Ahyi. It was adopted as an emblem of the Togolese state on 27 April 1960, the date of the country’s accession to independence. This connects the present design directly with the beginning of independent statehood.

How to recognise this flag

  • Count five stripes: three green stripes alternate with two yellow stripes.
  • Identify the red square at the upper hoist corner, not a full-height vertical band.
  • The red canton contains one plain white five-pointed star.
