About Cameroon and its flag
Cameroon flies a vertical green-red-yellow tricolour with a single gold star in the middle. The Presidency’s Civil Cabinet describes the colours as pan-African and presents the flag as a national rallying symbol. Its current single-star layout follows changes made during Cameroon’s movement from federation to a unitary state.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal vertical bands run from the hoist to the fly: green, red, and yellow. A gold five-pointed star is centred on the red band. The Presidency’s official publication specifies equal-size stripes and the central gold star, giving the flag a strict vertical tricolour composition.
- Green stripe: The Presidency says green represents hope as well as the lush vegetation across a large part of Cameroon.
- Red stripe and central gold star: The Presidency describes the red stripe and central gold star as a mark of unity, and says the red also evokes blood shed in the struggle for freedom.
- Yellow stripe: The Presidency says yellow represents the sun, understood as vital force and energy.
History and adoption
The Cameroon Legislative Assembly adopted the green-red-yellow tricolour in October 1957, and it remained unchanged at independence on 1 January 1960. After reunification in 1961, two gold stars were added for the federated entities. Following the 20 May 1972 referendum, the flag bore one central star; the Presidency dates official adoption of this form to 21 May 1975.
