About Republic of the Congo and its flag

The Republic of the Congo’s national emblem is a rectangular green, yellow and red tricolour. Article 3 of the 2015 Constitution specifies two green and red right triangles divided by a diagonal yellow band, with green at the flagstaff. The Constitution leaves dimensions, colour tones and further details to legislation.

Flag design and meaning

A yellow diagonal band rises from the lower hoist side to the upper fly side. It separates a green triangle at the hoist from a red triangle at the fly. The arrangement is neither horizontal nor vertical: the yellow band is the central feature, and the Constitution explicitly places green beside the flagstaff.

  • Green triangle: The Presidency presents green as a symbol of hope in the country’s economic and social future.
  • Yellow diagonal band: The Presidency associates yellow with the will for unity and Congo’s traditional sense of hospitality.
  • Red triangle: The Presidency frames red around the courage and ardour of the Congolese people and their aspiration for national advancement.

History and adoption

Constitutional Law No. 8 of 18 August 1959 fixed the flag of the Republic of the Congo. The General Secretariat of the Government’s Official Gazette index records Act No. 002-91-PCN-RG of 17 May 1991 as restoring the symbols of the Republic. The Constitution adopted in 2015 continues to define the same green, yellow and red design.

How to recognise this flag

  • Find the broad yellow diagonal running from the lower hoist corner to the upper fly corner.
  • When the flag is hoisted normally, green touches the pole and red occupies the opposite triangle.
  • Its green-yellow-red colours are arranged as a diagonal tricolour, not as horizontal or vertical stripes.
