About Senegal and its flag
Senegal’s national flag is a vertical green, gold and red tricolour marked by a green five-pointed star in the gold centre. The Constitution specifies both the equal bands and the star, while the Presidency gives official explanations of the elements’ significance.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal vertical bands run from green at the hoist through gold in the middle to red at the fly. A green five-pointed star is centred in the gold band. Article 1 of the Constitution expressly specifies the equal bands, their colours, and the star.
- Green: The Presidency explains that green has different stated associations within Senegal: the Prophet’s flag for Muslims, hope for Christians, and fertility for animists.
- Gold: The Presidency describes gold or yellow as a sign of wealth and the fruit of work; it also associates the colour with arts, letters, and the spirit.
- Five-pointed star: The Presidency says the five points signify Senegal’s openness to the five continents, while the green colour expresses hope linked to the young republic’s independence.
History and adoption
The United Nations protocol directory lists 20 August 1960 as the flag’s adoption or last-change date. Six days later, Article 1 of Senegal’s Constitution of 26 August 1960 described the same green, gold and red tricolour with a green five-pointed star. The matching constitutional description provides direct documentary continuity for the design.
How to recognise this flag
- Find the green five-pointed star placed exactly in the centre of the gold middle band.
- Read the vertical sequence from hoist to fly as green, gold, red; the central green star is the key distinguishing feature.
