About Mauritania and its flag

Mauritania’s national emblem is constitutionally defined as a gold crescent and star on green, with red rectangular bands at the upper and lower edges. The current form stems from the 2017 revision of Article 8; a later decree set out its construction. Its spare central field and strongly contrasting gold emblem make the flag especially recognisable.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has a 3:2 proportion. A gold five-pointed star and gold crescent are centred on a green field, with the crescent’s convex side facing downward. Horizontal red bands frame the top and bottom; the official manual assigns each band one fifth of the flag’s height.

  • Red bands: The Constitution prescribes their colour and placement but assigns no formal meaning. A Mauritanian state information-agency article reports that the 2017 addition is intended to evoke blood shed for the homeland.

History and adoption

The 1961 Constitution described the earlier emblem as a gold crescent and star on green, without red bands. In 2017, referendum-related Constitutional Law 2017-021 revised Article 8 to add them. Decree 467-2017 of 25 October then established the technical description of the revised flag.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the gold star-and-crescent centred on a plain green field.
  • The current flag has narrow red bands at both the top and bottom; the earlier green-only design did not.
