About Mali and its flag

Mali’s national flag is a three-band vertical tricolour. Article 30 of the 2023 Constitution describes equal green, gold and red bands and places the flag among the Republic’s national attributes. Its uncharged layout makes the ordered colour bands, rather than a badge or arms, its defining visual feature.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has three equal vertical bands in green, gold and red. Article 30 calls it a tricolour and describes no badge, coat of arms, or other central figure. The official legal description identifies both the equal division of the field and the three colours.

  • The national colours: At a government flag-raising ceremony, the colours were described collectively as symbols of honour, dignity and hope connected with national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

History and adoption

A 1960 constitutional text described the same tricolour with a black human ideogram, arms raised, on the gold band. A later Official Journal reference identifies Law No. 61-26 of 20 January 1961 as modifying that Constitution. The 2023 Constitution describes the three equal bands without a central device.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for three equal vertical bands in green, gold and red, with no emblem placed over the gold band.
  • Distinguish it from similarly coloured flags by checking that the three bands are vertical and equal in width.
