Flag design and meaning

The orange upper stripe, white middle stripe and green lower stripe are equal-width horizontal rectangles. A single orange disc is centred on the white stripe. The constitutional description contains no arms or lettering, making the disc and the clean three-band layout the principal visual identifiers.

• Orange upper band: The Government of Niger identifies it with the desert in the north of the country.
• Green lower band: The Government of Niger identifies it with the fertile plain of the Niger Basin in the south.
• Orange central disc: The Government of Niger identifies the disc as the sun.

History and adoption

The Government of Niger’s symbols page says the flag was adopted on 23 November 1959. A constitutional text later preserves its essentials by defining it as the national emblem and specifying the top-to-bottom colour order, equal horizontal bands and central orange disc.

How to recognise this flag

• Read the equal horizontal bands from top to bottom as orange, white and green.
• Check for the lone orange disc centred in the white band.
• The statutory design is a simple tricolour with a disc, rather than a flag bearing a coat of arms or text.
