About Nigeria and its flag
Nigeria's national flag is a plain vertical green-white-green triband. A federal government handbook describes the green outer panels and white centre, associating them with agricultural wealth and with peace and unity respectively. The same arrangement is the visual cue used for the national flag.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal vertical panels make up the flag: green at the hoist, white in the centre and green at the fly. The visual design is intentionally direct: two green outer panels frame one white central panel.

History and adoption
With independence approaching, a national planning committee launched a flag competition in 1958. The National Assembly Library Trust Fund records that Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi’s 1959 winning entry combined green–white–green bands with a 16-ray red quarter sun. The committee removed the sun after accepting the design; on 1 October 1960, the Union Jack was lowered and Nigeria’s green-white-green flag raised.
