About Guinea-Bissau and its flag

Guinea-Bissau’s national flag places a black five-pointed star in a vertical red hoist panel, beside yellow over green. The Presidency says it was adopted in 1973 when independence was proclaimed and identifies it as a national symbol of the republic.

Flag design and meaning

A vertical red panel occupies the hoist and carries a centred black five-pointed star. The remaining area is divided into two horizontal bands: yellow across the top and green below. The strong vertical panel makes the star the immediate focal point.
