About Sierra Leone and its flag

Sierra Leone’s national flag is a horizontal tricolour of green, white and blue. The 1991 Constitution declares that design the national flag and fixes the normal official proportion at nine units across by six down. A government civic-education publication records the official meanings assigned to its colours.

Flag design and meaning

The flag is a plain horizontal tricolour: green at the top, white through the centre, and blue at the bottom. No stars, arms, or other device interrupt the three bands. For normal official use, the Constitution specifies an overall proportion of nine units across to six units down.

Green band: The Teaching Service Commission identifies green with agriculture and natural resources.
White band: The Teaching Service Commission associates white with peace, unity and justice.
Blue band: The Teaching Service Commission connects blue with Sierra Leone’s natural harbour and waters.

History and adoption

The green, white and blue flag first rose over Freetown in 1961, according to the 2026 Independence Day presidential address. That historical moment should be distinguished from its later constitutional status: the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991 separately declares the same design to be the national flag.

How to recognise this flag

Look for three uninterrupted horizontal bands in the sequence green, white, then blue.
Check that blue is the lowest band and that the design has no central badge, star, or coat of arms.
