About Romania and its flag

Romania's national flag is a vertical blue, yellow and red tricolour. Article 12 of the Constitution fixes both its status and the order of the colours from the hoist. The current legislative annex specifies a 2:3 flag with equal-width bands and designated colour values. Romanian law proclaims 26 June as National Flag Day.

Flag design and meaning

From the flagstaff outward, the vertical fields are blue, yellow and red. The statutory construction sets the width at two-thirds of the length, producing a 2:3 proportion, and assigns one-third of the length to each colour. The official model identifies Pantone 280 C, 116 C and 186 C for the blue, yellow and red fields respectively.

The tricolour: The Ministry of Internal Affairs describes the tricolour as a symbol of Romanian national identity and unity. In its historical account, it says the 1848 Revolution gave the tricolour the symbolism of Justice and Fraternity.

History and adoption

A Bucharest prefecture publication for National Flag Day identifies 26 June 1848 as the day on which the revolutionary government decreed the red, yellow and blue tricolour as a national flag for all Romanians. The modern legal framework does not present that event as a sole adoption date: the Constitution defines the present flag, while Parliament has proclaimed 26 June National Flag Day.
