About Moldova and its flag

Moldova’s State Flag is a vertical blue–yellow–red tricolour bearing the State Emblem in the centre of the yellow band. Official descriptions give it a 1:2 ratio and set the emblem’s width at one-fifth of the flag length. Government material treats it as a principal emblem of sovereignty and independence.

Flag design and meaning

Three equal vertical bands run from the hoist in blue, yellow, and red. The State Emblem is printed on the yellow middle band. The flag is twice as long as it is high, and the emblem’s width is one-fifth of the flag’s length.

  • The tricolour: Moldovan government material presents the tricolour as a civic symbol that joins historical continuity to democratic values, equality, and solidarity among citizens.

History and adoption

The first Parliament designated the tricolour as the State Flag on 27 April 1990 and raised it on the legislature building that day. It was used without the State Emblem until the new State Emblem was adopted on 3 November 1990. Law No. 217 of 17 September 2010 later set out updated flag rules.

How to recognise this flag

  • Read the vertical bands from the hoist: blue, then yellow, then red.
  • Check for the State Emblem centred in the yellow band rather than a plain vertical tricolour.
