About Serbia and its flag

Serbia’s official flags share a red, blue and white tricolour. Article 7 of the Constitution provides for both a National Flag and a State Flag, while the government also identifies a square standard used by the President of the Republic and President of the National Assembly. The national-flag format has a 3:2 length-to-height ratio.

Flag design and meaning

The national version is a horizontal tricolour, read from top to bottom as red, blue and white. The related state flag retains those bands and carries the small Serbian coat of arms shifted toward the hoist. Official statistical material describes that badge as a crowned white double-headed eagle on a red shield.

  • Blue and white bands: The Serbian government’s national-symbols page says flag specialists interpret blue as fidelity and loyalty and white as purity and honesty, while cautioning that such readings may be universal rather than uniquely Serbian.

History and adoption

The 2006 Constitution established the current constitutional framework by providing for National and State Flags and leaving their appearance and use to legislation. Parliament adopted the law on the coat of arms, flag and anthem in May 2009, and the government says its 2010 decree set the graphical standards. These are successive legal steps, not a claim of one single flag-origin date.

How to recognise this flag

  • Read the horizontal bands from the top: red, then blue, then white.
  • A small crowned coat of arms shifted toward the hoist identifies the state-flag form; the national form is the plain tricolour.
  • The standard for the President and President of the National Assembly is square rather than the usual 3:2 rectangle.
