Flag design and meaning

The legal description specifies a red field and a gold-yellow sun. Eight rays extend from the disc to the edges, intersecting on the diagonal, horizontal, and vertical. The sun is centred where the diagonals meet; its disc diameter is one-seventh of the flag's length, and the proportions are 1:2.

Overall visual design: During debate on the bill, the Assembly's Political System Committee said that the proposed visual solution was grounded in Macedonia's cultural-historical traditions and marked its history. This is the committee's stated interpretation, rather than a universal meaning assigned to the colours.

History and adoption

The Assembly adopted the Flag Law on 5 October 1995. It was published in the Official Gazette on 6 October, and the law provides that it took effect upon publication. Article 4 repealed the earlier 1992 Flag Law, recording a legal replacement rather than an unexplained single-date history.
