About Croatia and its flag
Croatia’s national flag is a horizontal red, white and blue tricolour bearing the historical Croatian coat of arms at its centre. The Constitution defines those essential features, while statute regulates the detailed drawing and use of the state symbols. Its prominent chequered shield makes the flag especially distinctive among European tricolours.
Flag design and meaning
Three equal horizontal bands run red at the top, white in the middle and blue at the bottom. The central arms have 25 alternating red and white fields, beginning with red at the upper left. Above the shield is a crown of five smaller historical arms: the oldest known Croatian arms, followed by Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.
- Flag as a state symbol: Croatian law says that the coat of arms, flag and anthem represent the Republic of Croatia and express affiliation with it. Parliament also describes the contemporary flag as representing Croatian sovereignty, independence and unity.
- Crown above the chequered shield: The crown combines five historical arms: the oldest known Croatian arms and the arms of Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.
History and adoption
Croatian Parliament records that a red-white-blue Croatian tricolour was first officially raised at Ban Josip Jelačić’s installation in 1848. The present state flag’s form is grounded in the 1990 Constitution and the state-symbols law proclaimed on 21 December 1990. In 2025, Parliament designated 5 June as Croatian Flag Day to commemorate the 1848 event.
