About Bosnia and Herzegovina and its flag

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s state flag is the blue, yellow and white flag regulated by the Law on the Flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The law identifies it as the flag representing the state and provides for its display by common state institutions and diplomatic-consular missions.

Flag design and meaning

The flag is a blue rectangle with a 1:2 width-to-length ratio. A yellow triangle sits to the right of centre, while a row of white five-pointed stars begins at the upper edge and runs parallel to the triangle’s left side.

Yellow triangle: An Office of the High Representative explanation from 1998 describes the triangle as representing Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three constituent peoples.
Gold colour: The same contemporary Office of the High Representative explanation associates the gold colour with the sun and hope.
Blue field and white stars: The Office of the High Representative’s 1998 explanation says that the blue and stars stand for Europe.

History and adoption

A special commission prepared proposed neutral designs after disagreement over a common state flag. The Parliamentary Assembly did not accept the proposals on 3 February 1998. On 4 February, the High Representative imposed the flag law on a provisional basis pending parliamentary adoption in the appropriate form.

How to recognise this flag

Look for the unusually long 1:2 blue rectangle rather than a standard 2:3 flag.
The yellow triangle is offset toward the fly side, with a diagonal row of white five-pointed stars alongside it.
