About Czechia and its flag
Czechia’s national flag has a white upper half, red lower half, and a blue wedge projecting from the hoist. The Constitution lists the national flag among the country’s state symbols, while Act No. 3/1993 Coll. sets out its construction. Its appearance continues the former Czechoslovak flag.
Flag design and meaning
The flag consists of an upper white horizontal field and a lower red horizontal field. A blue wedge enters from the hoist and reaches halfway along the flag. Act No. 3/1993 Coll. gives the flag a width-to-length proportion of 2:3.

History and adoption
The Czech government’s history says independent Czechoslovakia initially used white and red after 1918, then replaced that flag with a design by Jaroslav Kursa that added a blue wedge. The former Czechoslovak flag was retained by the resistance abroad through later constitutional changes and ultimately became the flag of the independent Czech Republic. Act No. 3/1993 Coll. took effect on 1 January 1993 and defines the present state flag.
