About Poland and its flag
Poland’s national flag is the white-and-red bicolour, with the two colours defined in law as national colours and as the components of the state flag. The law also recognises a state flag bearing the national arms in the white band, a version used in specified official contexts alongside the plain flag.
Flag design and meaning
The plain Polish flag is a 5:8 rectangle of two horizontal bands of equal width: white above red. When the colours are displayed vertically, white is placed on the left as viewed from the front. A legally recognised state-flag variant places the white eagle arms in the centre of the white band.
- White and red: The Foreign Ministry traces the colours to heraldry: white derives from the White Eagle and the Lithuanian Pahonia, both shown on red shields. It explains the white-over-red order through the heraldic precedence of the emblem colour over its background.
History and adoption
Official guidance traces white and red as national colours to recognition in 1792 and their formal adoption by the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland in 1831. After Poland regained independence, the Legislative Sejm approved the flag’s appearance on 1 August 1919. Its present legal description is set out in the Act on national symbols.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for two unbroken, equal horizontal bands: white on top and red below.
- The ordinary flag has no central badge; the eagle-in-white-band version is a separate state-flag form.
- If displayed vertically, the white half should be on the viewer’s left.
